CAS Mixup Challenge with Brusho and Cling Wrap Technique

Good afternoon, welcome and all that stuff! We're getting rain at our house, but the temperature is a bit warmer. (gosh, the older I get, the more I talk about the weather! Or how I feel...I used to laugh to myself at old people who did that. Now I ARE one!) LOL

First off, big shout out to a lovely new follower:

Do go over to see Christine's wonderful work and say Hello. You won't be sorry! She's also a guest Designer this month at CAS Mixup with a gorgeous card.

There is a fun challenge going on over at CAS Mixup for January. Since I enjoy some of the techniques that are 'it' for this challenge, I wanted to try to join in. Here's the card:

Some blog pals are using a 'new to me' glossy cardstock, which I think is called pancetta or Carolina Cardstock for some clingwrap/brusho techniques. I don't have that, but thought I'd try Kromekote glossy cardstock (Marcos Paper) and Yupo, with the technique to see what would result. Both seemed to work ok, but the Yupo took much longer drying time. Even after 24 hrs, it was still wet in spots, which I daubed with a towel; still looked sort of wet, so then I used a Tim Holtz heat gun - very cautiously keeping it a good distance from the yupo which is a plastic type of paper and will melt I'm told. Tried that a couple of times over a few hours, and it did get dry.

What created this background was: glossy cardstock, sprinkled blue shades of Brusho over it, then spritzed with spray starch (cheap stuff from the Dollar Store). I'd not tried spray starch before, only water or other sprays. The starch makes it smell very nice I must say. Then use a piece of cling wrap, bigger than the piece, and as you lay the cling over the wet piece, scrunch it up a lot. Leave it to dry. I left this one overnight. When you remove the cling film, what a beautiful design you see.

Also tried spraying Dylusions After Midnight to wet the surface first, then sprinkled brusho blues, then starch, and this resulted in a much deeper blue (pretty too!). However, the cling wrap does dilute the depth of the color though, at least it did for me.

Then die cut with a stitched square. Tried to stamp with a Penny Black clear stamp.First tried a navy blue Staz-on (one of the newer pads with the square design, not the old-style rectangle shape pad). Used Misti so could repeat stamp but that didn't help. Not certain if it's the stamp, stamping with that ink on the slick surface, or Just Plain Ole Operator Error! Cleaned the stamp well (and now of course it's stained). Repeated the process with the Staz-on black - no better results.  Cleaned again - then tried Versafine Onyx Black. Stamped 2 times, (thank you Misti) and got this result. My friend Nancy S. (no blog) suggested I try Ranger Archival Black with this stamp - so I did (but this effort is not that try!) I'm pleased to say the test stamping with Ranger did work better. Just sayin'. Still not sure this stamp is not part of the problem though.

Anyway, mounted the focal point with fun foam for dimension over an embossed floral pattern, then onto a white card base. The sentiment was stamped with the same versafine black, and heat embossed with clear EP, corners rounded. That's that. A neighbor has just had her 2nd knee replacement, so this is for her. Hope ya'll like it and will pop over to CAS Mix Up Card Challenge to join in with the fun - I'm off to link up this card.

Please take a moment to see the Cards by Friends page, as a new Christmas card was added with this post.

I hope that the explanation of my experiments is not too confusing for any of you who might wish to try this technique for the first time. It is a lot of fun. (a good tip: wear gloves, I didn't).

Blessings and Hugs.

  1. I love reading others experiments. I find stamping on glossy paper is always challenging. Usually black stazon or Archival jet black works the best. Your stamp is a PB, can't imagine that was the problem. I would test though with regular cs to make sure. Maybe your spray starch made it more difficult to stamp.

I have used all kinds of papers for the cling wrap technique. I prefer either mixed media or hot press watercolor papers.

Even with all your stamping issues, your Brushos cling wrap background turned out beautifully. I would love to see what you do with one of your other backgrounds.

TFS your beauty, Mary and sharing your experiment with us at CAS Mix Up. Hugs and Happy Stamping.

  9. Hi Mary,
what a very wonderful technque and your work was well worth all that hard work.
It all looks so very amazing and beautiful.
Love the gorgeous vibrant colours too.

I think we can nearly all relate to your comment about getting older and talking about the weather or how we feel.
I am often told by my family that I have already said that once or twice. LOL.
Love and big crafty hugs from my house to yours. Jenny L.

  10. This has worked beautifully Mary and I love the bright blue with the black PB flower silhouette and what a pretty embossed background to show it off. Stamping on glossy card can sometimes be difficult, and I have bought some starch to give it a try but haven't done so yet, but perhaps the starch makes the surface a bit sticky which also makes it more difficult for the ink to stick . I will let you know when I have given it a try myself. I have used Versafine and Archival inks and up to now have found both work well. x

  11. Mary, what a great day experimenting. I love your cling wrap background, such awesome shapes. Like lots of others I use Ranger archival, and heat set before touching, on shiny surfaces it takes a little while to dry. So happy you played along with CAS Mix up cling wrap challenge :)

Thanks for giving me a shout out on your blog and for your kind words.

  12. I have to admire the patience you have to stick with this technique and see it through to the end, but what a gorgeous finished card! WOW! The depth of color on the blue looks amazing and so so pretty! Great card creation, and it may have taken a lot of experimenting and time, but it was so well worth it!

  13. Interesting to read about all your experiments! I've used a glossy cs, but I've sprayed the starch on first, then sprinkled the brushos. I'm going to try it your way and see how it compares.

Beautiful card in gorgeous colours - love the royal blue with the black silhouette. Thanks so much for joining us at CAS Mix Up!

  15. What a gorgeous background Mary. Your silhouettes are so pretty on that blue background. It made me smile this morning. Weather and how your feeling. I had to laugh at your comments. My blog is full of that this week. I've had the flu all week and we are in the middle of a winter storm. Supposed to get socked in with snow all day today. So yeah, I hadn't thought about it but I guess as we age we do talk about how we feel and the weather a lot. LOL! Have a wonderful weekend!

  16. This is one beautiful card Mary, I love the bright blue and the black, fabulous design and technique.
Yep, is an age thing Mary talking about the weather, I used to get annoyed with my mum for always asking about the weather up... she lived in Central Scotland, now like you it's something I ask all the time, Kate x

  17. Mary, your background is just gorgeous and your image is so crisp! Love how this looks. IF you suspect a defective stamp, Penny Black is phenomenal to work with if you call or email them. Not only do they help you, but I've received a follow up call from them to make sure all was ok. I sure don't see any issues on this lovely card for your neighbor!

  19. I did laugh at your comment about the weather, you wouldn't be old just to talk about the weather here in the UK, everyone does young or old, it's the main topic of conversation, as it changes from hour to hour LOL.

Your card is beautiful I love the gorgeous colour and pattern you achieved on your background, then the black stamp, both fab together. With added embossing, who could ask for more? Love it Mary.

  32. Love the effect you got on that paper. I just wondered what the spray starch did differently from using just plain water? I have seen the cling film 'trick' before but not with starch.
