I usually work on my cards at night, while watching old British series on Netflix or Acorn - which I love. Lately been enjoying Series 6 of Vera on Acorn and found the old Masterpiece Theater Duchess of Duke Street on Amazon Prime. Loving this - as I saw it many, many years ago on Masterpiece PBS.
While I'm watching tv, I'll color or doodle. This card is from a doodle session, where I'd stamped a line art flower (don't remember the maker, possibly Hero Arts, but if you're interested, I can find it in the Stash). I'd seen someone do Zentangle in an image like this, so gave it a try. I'll share 2 versions...and explain why I changed something after I saw the first photo.
Final effort |
Notice the hummingbird...Now look at the next photo, and I'll bet you can see why I changed the bird's colors.
First look |
Liked the soft pinky colors on the bird here, thought it would work ok with the pink lattice trim, the pink in the flower. Until I saw the photo. Nope, that's not gonna go. Die cut another bird, used the colors from the butterfly, liked it much better!! What do YOU think? I've never seen a hummingbird wearing either of these colors, but maybe....somewhere?
- Used a Copic multiliner black pen to draw the doodles after stamping the flower. Die cut with a S/B label, traced the inner edge with a red multiliner. Not the smoothest of tracing, but - hey, it's not Hallmark! Call it whimsical! I think I try too hard - I'm not good with being 'loose'.
- background was a sprayed piece, that perhaps was gone over with some Distress ink and then embossed. It's been in the You-Know-Where pile for a while.
- MB Box tile (put away, so not recalling the name..but again, I can find it if you want to know)...cut from pink snippet. The flower had pink in it, the snippet was handy, so there you go. Looked 'beachy' with the greens & golds of the background I thought.
- MB butterfly and overlay. under layer was colored with Zig brushes in a red and bright yellow, blended. Rubbed some Liquid Pearl Opal over this layer with my finger, and IRL has a bit of shine that can be seen through the filigree overlay. Die cut a natural color snippet with the matching MB butterfly overlay, versamark, and WOW Pearl Gold, 2 coats. Quite pretty.
Tessla die hummingbird cut from the same natural snippet, colored with Zigs, Liquid Pearl opal, as I was thinking to bring in the pink of the borders. The more I looked at this, and when I saw the photo "Huh - uh, this is not good". So recut another hummer, colored to try to match the butterfly, more Pearls spread on it, just adhered over the pink fella. Liked it much better.
Added some dewdrops and a bead that was a RAK from my sweet Brenda at Crafting with Friends.
Brenda had sent me some of these she had made with Pony Beads. They're so pretty, and the bag is on my desk, but I usually don't think to add this kind of embellie or sequins. I'm trying to do better with that. I just never really know how to place them so they don't look peculiar!!
No sentiment, but this may become a birthday card to a family member, who is not too critical. I really didn't like the Zentangle in the flower at first, but the more I'm looking at it, the better I'm liking the effect {-:
Also, thanks to everyone for all your kind & sweet comments on the water color Christmas berries. You all made me feel so much better about my efforts, 'cause truly, sometimes I get _real_ discouraged with trying to get better with this technique. I guess we all go there at times!
Thanks for popping in to visit. Great porch swing weather, if you should be able to join me for a cup of something (or a glass of something, ....whichever!!!) Big Hugs
Love both your hummingbirds! I've never seen a hummingbird in real life, but the first one matches really very well wih the colours of the card! And this butterfly is just amazing! You have made a great work on it! The idea of a zentangle flower is brilliant, and it looks gorgous with these warm and bright colours! Beautiful touch with the bead, too!

I like the Hummingbird on the first card best, gorgeous colours and backgrounds on both card and love the Zentagled flower.

Oh my Mary this looks fabulous. Love this.

Your card is a beauty Mary. Pink and yellow is one of my favourite colour combos and the added colours make it look super. I agree with you that the brighter humming bird looks best as he stands out better. I've only ever seen one in a butterfly garden (one of those covered in places where they regulate the atmosphere. Now as for your zentangling I think that is fantastic. It really works so well on that open flower. I'ts really fun to do isn't it.
ReplyDeleteI was interested to hear the old British series you have enjoyed watching. I really enjoy Vera and she's such an interesting character too I think. Do you get Call the Midwife. That's one to look out for. Barbxx
Your choice of colors looks wonderful together and I really like the hummingbird (in both colors). Beautiful card!
ReplyDeleteYour evening doodling has created a beautiful flower Mary. I can see why you changed the colour of the bird. The blues are lovely but they get lost on the page.
ReplyDeleteWe all get behind on commenting now and again so don't worry about it.
Enjoy the rest of your week.
Hugs Sharon. x
The hummingbird definitely looks better on the first card -beautiful card and love the bright colours

ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the hummer! The first one kind of blended into the background! Too bad the camera can't show the shine! Pretty colors and I love the design inside the flower!
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty card Mary my friend! Glad you're enjoying Vera! I preferred the colours on the top card too, seems to stand out better (well, on my screen anyway). Have a very lovely evening! Hazel xx

ReplyDeleteGosh Mary, Duchess of Duke Street takes me back.....! To be honest, I like both versions of the hummingbird, when I lived in Canada we saw them occasionally but always in blue and green but I am sure there must be 100s of varieties Your zentangle flower is gorgeous too! Hugs, Anne xx
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful! Love how you doodle!
ReplyDeleteWow Momma Mary, what a beautiful card! I love your Zentangled flower. You did a great job with the zentangling. The colors in this card are so beautiful, some of my favorites! Your background is amazing looking and I bet all the shimmer and shine is amazing in real life as well. I love the butterfly and yes, I do think that the hummer is betting in the brighter colors. But the other hummer is beautiful as well so I hope you use him on another card sometime! Hugs, Brenda

Must say I like the brighter bird, but everyone has another taste... A beautiful cheerfill card! Hope you have planed a fun weekend!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful card with such wonderful vibrant colours. I've given up on trying to keep up, I just do what I can :) I'm behind in crafting as well, I've been busy. Take care xx
ReplyDeleteI like both versions of your card, Mary, but I have to say I like the vibrant hummer better. The paler version is very pretty but it gets washed out with your vibrant zentangle flower design! Great Maretangling!! Enjoy your day!! Hugs, Darnell
ReplyDeleteYour colors are just beautiful! I love the Zentangles flower. I have to say, the birds are beautiful, and I like them both, but love the first one just a little more : ) Love the soft pretty die in the background.

This happens to me too, I take a photo and after that I spot changes I want to do. Seeing both versions, and 'putting on the same glasses' as I wear on reviewing my own work, I think you were right to change the humming bird colors. But saying that I wouldn't have thought anything wrong of the first one. But I put time in my cards, and working with them I easily spot (afterwards!) things I'd like to change. But I think that's normal and the reason for progress. The image feels traditional and classy, but the way you colored it gave it a modern look.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful coloring Mary Not my fav thing to do but I love this card ......Lis
ReplyDeleteHi Mary,
ReplyDeletewhat a glorious card, and the colours are so vibrant, and beautiful.
Love your fab zentangle flower, and the very sweet hummingbird.
You were right to change the colour of the bird as it was lost in the lighter colours.
Super background created by you also.
I just wish I lived nearer as I would love to watch you create those fab backgrounds, and as for the swinging on the porch with a drink sound a wonderful idea.
Love and biggest hugs from my house to yours.
Lots of crafty love. Jenny L.
What a neat idea to add doodle art to a line art flower. It really adds something as this is fabulous! I like the darker hummingbird better as it shows up better and just fits better. Birds of all colors are welcome here though!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty card.
ReplyDeleteFantastic doodling, Mary! I am especially drawn to those gorgeously shaded colors. Soooo pretty! Hope your weekend is happy and special! Hugs, de
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!! I just shared a zentangle bird.
ReplyDeleteWow!! I am impressed - I never doodle. Once in a while I will color an image while watching TV but my favorite shows (LUCIFER) I just have to cuddle up on the couch with a glass of wine and enjoy!

Lovely card Mary. I do like the bright colours you've used.
