New Computer, Windows 10

Clip art from the Graphics Fairy
Good evening ya'll. Today I got a new computer, withWindows 10. I'm looking for where things are...and they ain't where I think they should be. My Outlook 2016 didn't want to import the saved folders in my email program (which was Outlook 2010). My guru thought he'd exported those folders, but they didn't import back in on the new computer. We still have the old one, so he is to come back next time he's in my area, hook up the oldie again, and try once more. I would have retrieved a bunch of stuff, but he didn't think I'd need to do so.  We think he got all my address book stuff but if you are someone I email with, PLEASE send me an email to the address you normally use for me, so I can be sure I get you added back properly. Oh the joys of having a new computer. I'm a bit intimidated with the Windows 10, since it was so aggravating to me when I tried to install it some while back. At least my tech got all the peripheral equipment working with the new network.

I'm still not any further on trying to get the comment notifications into my email. I thought the problem might be that I set up the blog with a Hotmail address, and when I finally remembered how to access that address, I did see a bunch of the awaiting moderation comments. But took care of those (I think!) and now nothing else is coming back into Hotmail either. I am so frustrated I could just spit!!!

I'm trying to return comments by looking at either the Reading List, OR by just clicking on the blogger's name in the published comments. I've tried the suggestions many of you have made, but so far nothing is working. I hope you won't think I'm not bothering to visit you. I can work with this stuff for just so long; then I get irritated and just have to get up and walk away. I wasn't expecting the new computer to be built and delivered so fast. So that's another hitch in the works too.

An old neighbor - who moved about 30 miles away from where we live and isn't as readily accessible as when he lived just down the street - builds a lot of custom designed computers for the folks in here. Also he has a business that he operates, now that he's retired from school teaching. We discuss how I use my computers, what softwares I want on the system, DVD drives, etc. He's quite expert, and I'd hate to just buy one from a company. I learned a long time ago, companies put the very lowest quality of parts in one that you buy, just enough so that they can say "It has Intel inside" or verbiage of that sort. I know my tech uses top quality parts, and is honest about his charges. This is about the 5th computer he has built for us. He did tell me, though, I'll have a learning curve with Windows 10, so don't get upset with it right away.

Anyway, just wanted to update you with what's going on with me. I do thank all of you who expressed kind sympathy for my cousin who passed away. We had been close as children (long, long ago!) but as adults, we had not been all that close. Still it was sad for her family and reminded all the rest of the extended family of cousins that we are only here for a brief time. So best to live each day to the fullest extent possible. What I heard at the service was something I'd hope would be said of me someday: "She never said an unkind word about anyone". I'm not sure I'd live up to that, although - mostly I do try! This cousin was much like my aunt, who also never said anything unpleasant about someone. She said "If you can't say something nice or kind - just keep your mouth closed!"

Hope all of you are having a good week. It's been sunny & hot here, keeps looking like we could get some rain, but we don't! Working on some cards, but not ready to post anything yet!

Big hugs & Happy Friday. I'm still trying to catch up with the comments!

  1. There was a huge learning curve when I switched to Windows 10, Mary, but it does get easier. The blogger comments are so frustrating, more so because blogger doesn't seem to want to fix it. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!! Big hugs :)

  2. Mary, my husband has just got a new laptop with w10, and what a nightmare it has been. Numerous phone calls etc to our ISP and other companies just to get things to work properly. He has had to change his email to a gmail address, so that is another learning curve. He has beenready to throw it out the window a couple of times! Why does Microsoft have to make things so difficult!!!!!

  3. Good luck with your new computer and windows 10. I thought I would never get over the learning curve with windows 8 and am loathe to upgrade to anything else now. I haven't heard great things about Windows 10 so I hope they have something else by the time I need a new computer.

  4. Hi Mary, I have sent you an email, so hopefully you can get me in your address book on your new PC.

I hated Windows, so when my hard drive failed, I got the chap that sorted that for me to put Linux on. So much better.

Hope you aren't pulling your hair out and can getg everything sorted on the new PC.

    Take care
    Hugs

  5. Good luck with getting to grips with Windows 10 Mary, I am still finding my way around it and the "bad" words still slip out from time to time, particularly when they do updates!! xx

  6. Good luck with your new PC Mary, your friend certainly sounds like he knows a thing or 2 about them. Wise words too to just walk away when it all gets too much, I hope your humming along as you used to soon, Cathy x

  7. Windows 10 isn't as big a change as some have been. At least I don't think so. You can Google where is ??? on Windows 10 and it's a big help. Good luck!

  8. Hang in there Mary! I'm not getting comment e.mails anymore either. Computers are so frustrating sometimes and blogger more so!

  9. I jumped to W10 out of necessity when my old machine running 7 crashed, and to be honest the learning curve is far less steep than you think. Good luck!

  10. I have had Windows 10 for a while I still have issues but it is not bad. It's good you had an honest person to build a computer for you.
It is too bad we lose contact with people or family members that we were once very close too. It sounds like your cousin was a very kind person (your Aunt too) It is a shame there aren't more people as kind as they were.

  11. Getting a new computer is always a bit daunting but great you have had it built to suit, our son has done that for himself too, he just buys the parts he wants and does it himself, more replacing bits than starting from scratch but he then knows he has it tailor made. As for Windows 10 I have it on my laptop but to be honest I only use it very minimally, mainly for things to do with my cards and some surfing the net, but with any new system it takes time to get to grips with it. We had a big change to a Mac for our main computer several years ago and that was the same, we didn't like it much for a while but now I must say I prefer it to Windows, but they all have their good points and bad. Hope you soon get it sorted Mary and that the e-mail notification thing will return to normal. x

  12. Hi Mary, when my pc has broken I didn't want Win 10, but switching to this new OS the learning curve was more simple than I supposed and now I'm so happy about it. So don't worry, I'm sure you will learn the changes early.

  13. Win 10 is a learning curve, but since you have a cell phone, it should be a little bit easier as it too uses apps. I know you will pick it right up though as you are pretty savvy. Darnell thinks that blogger is not letting comments come to our email anymore for protection reasons. I think she may be right as I haven't gotten a single comment come in, but I don't know if it is because of my email changes and they are going to my old email or what. Don't know how to fix that either. I've changed my email everywhere I can think of, but I'm not as savvy! lol Life is short when you think about it, so best live it as best one can. We all can learn from "if you have nothing good to say, don't say anything"! Hope you enjoyed seeing everyone even though it wasn't under good circumstances. Love and hugs, Brenda

  14. I think no matter how you upgrade it will be different. My son sent me a new iPad for Mother's Day and I had a dickens of a time adjusting to that one compared to my old one. And, when we upgraded our Windows 7 to Windows 10 I was lost for awhile too. So I hope you give it some time to get it figured out. I sure hope they can retrieve all of your things too. As to comments, I think everyone is having issues if you are on blogger. I know I am. I have the blogger window for comments. I have not been able to comment back to those who leave such lovely words, so I make a comment myself saying how much I love their visits and comments and then have emails sent to me. I don't know what else to do other then that. Anyway, good luck and if you visited me thanks so much.

  15. Hi Mary, You'll like Windows 10 once you get the kinks worked out. The only problem I've had is finding photos sometimes and when they do updates they mess with your desktop icons, so be prepared for that. I'm sorry to hear about your cousin's death.

As for comments, there is no fix ATM but Blogger says they are "aware of the problem," (cough) so we aren't holding our breath! The only thing to do is go into your own post as soon as you publish it and leave yourself a comment, making sure you click the box "email follow-up comments to mary ...etc." and then all comments after that will come into your mailbox. It's a giant pain, but it does work. Hang in there! Hugs, Darnell

  16. I wish you luck with your new computer. I bought a laptop with Win10 and do NOT like using a laptop at all so it's become nothing more than a dust collector. I like my desktop and I'm sure sooner than later my Win7 is going to croak. Good luck with it all and I'm sure you'll be winging along just fine with win10 in no time at all. You can always get a cheap flash/thumb drive to d/l or save your files from the old pc and transfer them to your new pc easily enough!

  17. Just use it Mary and get used to it, that's what I did, my son said he would get it back to Win 8, if I couldn't get on with it, but I just kept to it and now all is normal and familiar to me. Good Luck.

  18. I'm sorry to hear that you are having a few teething problems with Windows 10 Mary. I changed quite some time ago and whilst there was quite a steep learning curve I think it is well worth persevering as it is much better when you get used to it.
Regarding the comments situation, if you leave a comment on your own blog post and tick the 'Email follow-up comments to your email address' box you will then receive an email for every comments that is left after your comment - this is a solution if you post manually on your blog but not if you schedule your posts.

  19. I haven't found that much of a problem with learning the windows 10. Of course I don't do a whole lot on it either. I figure if I can get email, my blog, order, and do the digi images, oh and pictures, I'm pretty well ok. The rest I just muddle my way through. One think I don't do (and should) are the apps.....I know - I'm chicken!
Glad you got a new one and I'll email you so you can check to see if you can get it and all that stuff.

I hate getting something new that is technical. I wish you the best of luck with it.

  21. Hi again. Yes, either blog is okay. Some people who have Blogger can't post on Wordpress and vice versa. I already had a Wordpress I wasn't using, so I just duplicated everything and then no one gets shut out.

After you make a post, comment on it and check the "Notify me". Then, you'll get email notifications. They will be no-reply, but at least you'll know someone commented.

  22. p.s. I'm pretty sure I followed you, but I don't see it on your list. You can delete this comment.

  23. All the best with Windows 10 -I did adapt fairly quickly - much faster than I thought I would. Regarding blogger, I just keep the "comments awaiting moderation" page open on my computer the whole time - much less frustrating just to click on the tab and check

  24. Oh Mary, what a pain! I am hoping my computer lasts a bit longer as I am not keen to go to Windows 10 although Mister says it does get easier..... good luck with it all! Hugs, Anne xx

  26. It is so frustrating to work with a new Win. update. My new computer wasn't compatible with my printer so I had to get a new one. I'm not very good with computers so I always have to ask someone for help. It will come hang in there.

  27. Hi Mary....
Great you have a newly built computer but yes Windows 10 is quite a learning curve x I so enjoyed reading your post and it is so thoughtful of you to let us all know what's going on. Don't you wish that Blogger had just left well alone?
You know the tip about leaving yourself a message... but I had forgot to do it on my last post and then I remembered and did it. Well the first kind bloggers that left a message did come up on my post but not in my email so I can't reply to them. After me leaving myself a message everything is OK again. But honestly like you I could spit too x.
Funny you should say about if you haven't got anything good to say then say nothing, as I too am familiar with that saying but.....
Now if someone doesn't say anything kind, when I think they might, then I know they don't like it etc???
Thinking of you and your computer problems etc....You are not alone x
Enjoy the rest of the weekend x

  28. Wow! You've been busy - it's so hard to find time for all the things we want to do, isn't it, Mary? Glad you got to visit with friends, and I hope you soon master your new puter! I love my iMac - we've had Apple products since 1989 and there is nothing I like better! Sending all my love and hugs your way for a peaceful, loving summer, where you are surrounded by friends and family. xx

  30. I hope by now you are feeling more comfortable with windows 10. I have not made that leap, am happy just where I am, but know at some point, it has to be done.

And blogger hasn't helped with all the commenting issues. But, we are a determined bunch and we will conquer! :)

Hope you are keeping well Mary! xx
