Black Dylusions - Memory Box Red Hearts

Hiya. Back again with another Valentine card.

I've never experimented with the black Dylusions  spray, as it's quite dark & I tend to be heavy handed with my spritz technique. Decided to mix up a bit with the white linen; added in some Heidi Swapp Color Shine in Tinsel  (more opaque than the Dylusions) to create a lighter silvery shade. In another bottle - just plain water with the black dylusions. Set about spraying 90# Strathmore Mixed Media paper with the sprays, not a clue as to what it would look like. After laying down the blacks, spritzed with Color Shine Chartreuse (which looks more gold than greenish to my eyes). Liked it so far - a bit different from my usual pastels or brights. After it dried a bit spritzed on some Tattered Angels Candy Apple Red. I've had the Tattered Angels and some other sprays for a while, but never really got good results with them, until I begin playing with the Dylusions. Oh yes, I do wear gloves, and I've plenty of waste paper covering the work space as well. It is messy. The inks will wash off your hands, though it takes a wash or two (ask how I know this). I use the cheap white gloves boxed in 100 or 200 count - about $3 - $6.00 - wherever I find them inexpensively. Sometimes I can find them in the Dollar Store, but not always. These are thin enough that it's not clumsy to work with gloves on. I can't do anything wearing the Playtex heavier gloves made for household chores.

Here's what resulted:

- Memory Box Twirled Heart die(98279), which yielded a thin outline and used the pop out hearts on the corner. This red paper has a velvety texture & came from JoAnn. The die cut extremely well, but I did give it a couple of passes in the Big Shot to ensure it cut cleanly.

- Penny Black Love die (there's 4 in the package and it's really a set of Christmas sentiments). This also cut very well, but again, a couple of passes.

That's it! A little different look for me, no copics, no stamps, and I'm not quite sure how I feel about this one. DH wasn't either. His usual comment when he doesn't really like my card is "well, it doesn't look like You". So I guess this won't be _his_ Valentine! I've a pretty sentiment stamp that I got at Sparkle n Sprinkle over Christmas - nice verse I mean - so that will go inside.

Thanks for your visit, have a wonderful rest of the evening, and HAPPY WEEKEND! Hugs.

Edit: Thanks to blogger Cornelia , I got a heads up that this card would fit in with the challenge currently going on at Simply Create Too. I hope that it's acceptable, and thanks Cornelia!

  1. It's very creative and beautiful, Mary!! The background is fabulous!! I love the dies you used!! I don't use the black Dylusions very often, either. And I use gloves, too, yet I still get ink all over me :) I use a Ranger Craft Scrubbie and it usually takes the inks off pretty well. Have a wonderful evening :)

  2. It is definitely an interesting card. I don't dislike it. In fact, I like it because it isn't the usual light, airy, frilly, pink Valentine's card. You'd definitely have to send it to the right person. I'm not into making messes so I dont' think these sprays are for me. When you mix up all these sprays do you end up with a zillion random bottles of mixed colors? I've often wondered.

  3. You really did go to a lot of trouble and a big mess to create this card, but it's so worth the effort! It turned out so pretty, and those red accent hearts (both solid and outlines) look fantastic with the red LOVE sentiment! Well done Mary! You have more of a desire to play than I'll ever have :) I rarely use glitter because I can't stand the mess! LOL

  4. Wow Momma Mary, this card is gorgeous!! Gosh you do so well with those sprays!! I recognized the Tattered Angle sprays, but have no clue after that. lol I think I need me some sprays to work with, not sure I would get the results that you do though, but sure do love it! No this card doesn't look like you, but it sure is a beautiful card just the same! Hugs!

  5. This is lovely Mary and well done for doing a different technique, for you that is. I love the spray effect you have created. Don't forget to keep the oversprayed papers, as you can get some great "accident" papers. to cut up later.
I usually keep a pizza box (one that has not had pizza in but maybe 12x12 papers) which I use as a spray box. I put some papers in there to mop up the over sprays. It saves having to clear a large spray and the lid acts as a table protector. Just a thought!

  9. I really like your card Mary, and I love the way you have linked the two die cuts together. I am not very good at using sprays but it is great fun to have a play with them from time to time and I quite like getting in a mess sometimes.

  11. Great card Mary. I love the heart die and the love. I've never used sprays so it's nice to see how it looks on a card. I think this would be a good guy card since it's not pink. I like the red and black together.

  13. Mary, this looks amazing! I love how striking the red die-cuts look against the dark background!

I use an old box as a 'spray station' with my Dylusions - I must practise more, usually I get more ink on me than on my card lol! Have a great weekend!

  14. I like the effect you have achieved here, and the Colour Shine in Tinsel looks really good over the top with the added red which just lifts it. The row of large and small hearts up one side with the love die and then the solid hearts on the right is the perfect finishing touch. This sort of technique is always interesting because each time yields a different effect, and this one is very dramatic. Great card Mary. x

  19. Mary, this is so unique and I do like it. The tinsel spary is yummy. I know I could do some really bad damage with the black. I probably couldn't control it but I see you did. I love the sentiment with all those pretty hearts leading up to it...or away from it. :-) I had such a laugh about what you said about hubby's comments. HAHAHA

I bought some Heidi Swapp color shine yesterday in coral and sea foam. I think coral is my favorite color ever. Sure hope I use it soon and don't let it set around on the shelf.

  20. I think you've created a beautiful texture in your background that sets off that beautiful MB box die cut (they cut like a charm in the cuttlebug too) - it was fun to read how you 'played'. I find the black Dylusions dark as well, but have used it with a stencil over a bright colour of dry ink(s). You have inspired me to take it out for another try. I never use gloves and yes get inky hands, but it washes off after doing a load of dishes or two, or after a shower, wash your hair, at least it's water soluable. The Tim Holtz scrubby thingy (hard sponge) helps to remove ink as well. I always know when my DH doesn't 'get' something I've created, but don't worry what he thinks ! We love it :) Happy Sunday, Shirleyx

  22. Well I love it! Gorgeous inky and so sparkly colours, a stunning background Mary, those Dylusions keep calling my name but will have to wait quite a while lol! I love that you have used the die and the 'waste' from the die. I regularly have this issue with my DH when I change style or go a bit mucky or vintage lol. He has got better though it's not an immediate 'don't like it' these days, have a lovely evening xx

  26. Beautiful card, I have just bought the Memory Box heart die, haven't made a card with the swirl heart bit but added the popped out hearts on another card I was making, I always like to see how the die cuts before I do anything - loved how this none turned out. Hazel
