Butterfly Challenge = R + Ruby

Happy Saturday! Here the sun is shining, it's fairly warm, and I finally got a card ready in time for the 54th Butterfly Challenge (where the theme is Butterfly +R for Recycle and/or Ruby Red! Last time I missed the deadline.

Here's the card and then will explain where the recycle effort comes into play (and you must promise not to laugh!!! - well, ok, you can laugh a little bit).

- SU Rose die cut from white and a created background, that looks pink, even though red sprays and other products were used (brusho, mica sprays, mica powders...it just would NOT turn red!) Decided to exaggerate the offset for this more so it would be more than just a shadow effect.

- MBox Pippi Butterfly overlay created with alcohol inks over Yupo paper...Liked this red, and die cut with my new metal plate, cut like a dream. All little bits just fell right out. This Yupo paper is such fun to play with using alcohol inks.

- MB Isabella Butterfly for the underlayer using some of the spray created background, and decided to hunt up a snippet of red for one of these...I was getting very discouraged at having some red. Now it looks more burgundy than red when I see the photo.

Now for the recycle - which is the background: Used a piece of very lightweight cardboard that came from a package of men's jockey shorts! (ahem...a new package was required at our house, and when I was gathering up the wrappings to toss, thought the white cardboard had a rather nice finish on it. Wondered how that might take to alterations. Remember, now: I don't DO altered stuff! So perhaps this is my 1st foray into that arena!! LOL). Ok, first I sponged on about 4 shades of DI red inks. Didn't want to really dry well, so heat set between applications of succeedingly darker reds. Still looked quite 'pink'. Then advanced to sprinkling brusho Osto Red, Scarlet and Crimson dry powders, spritzed very lightly. Now - - yes, getting some red. Puddled each layer of the brusho color around with the Ranger Spritzer tool, let it dry slightly, dropping another color of the red crystals over. Then dropped on some Ken Oliver Metallic Platinum, puddled that around. Still not as red as I wanted. Finally got Dylusions Post Box red, a Lindy's Stamp Gang spray that looked red, spritzed, spritzed, and finally said "that's as red as this is gonna get". Left it to dry. The pink rose and the butterfly underlays came from smooshing up the over sprays of the different sprays...and really created quite a pretty pink.

Added on some sequins..(and there's more than I would have used normally; the package spilled and it was easier to pick 'em up with the sticky pickup tool, adhere on the card front, than try to put back in the package. These are Pretty Pink Posh, so they were not going in the trash!!!

Hope you've gotten a chuckle from my adventures, (and psst...don't mention the recycle item!). Do join in over at Mrs. A's Butterfly Challenge and you can have some fun too!

Have added 2 new pretties to the Cards by Friends tab, that you'll be able to enjoy along with me. It's lovely to have such talented and generous friends!

Have a wonderful afternoon, thanks for coming by to visit, and Blessings and Hugs.

Edit: Forgot to say that the sentiment is 2 layers of vellum, colored with copic reds, because I want to keep a light effect in that corner. Used a glue that didn't show to adhere the layers together, since the vellum was colored.

  8. An absolute beauty of a card Mary. Well you certainly achieved lots of lovely ruby red on that wonderful background. What great recycling and sorry I did have a little snigger. I think you were probably born to alter. Thank you for joining in the Butterfly Challenge. Barbxx GDT

  16. So glad you persevered to make this fabulous card Mary - well worth the effort! I have saved (hoarded) some of that 'card' that you used, so it sounds as though I will need to be patient with it.

  18. What a lot of 'puddling' LOL. Fantastic effect my friend! You will have to tell me how to make that plate (pretty pleease). Also, LOVE the 'upcycling' . . . I do those things too. I have a box of strips of card from the packaging of MFT stamps, Mama Elephant, you name it . . . it's always a good feeling knowing that you 'got something for nothing'. I hope you're having a wonderful weekend my friend! Hazel xx

  23. Mary, I'm not sure which I enjoyed more, your narrative or the card! Laughed out loud especially about the sequins! Love this card! You have the ability to think outside the box! What a wonderful, creative design! You are SO right about red. I'm beginning to think the color does not exist!

  24. Oh my goodness Mary , your recycled element really takes the biscuit! Lol. Love it. Just catching up with my commenting. Took two days out to finish up the garden. It was meant to rain today but is lovely and sunny so The Doc is going to set the extension cable up through the UT Window so I can do the ironing outside. Back to your card though. Your dedication to getting it just right knows no bounds. I'm amazed and delighted with the results. Thank you for fluttering by where your entry will be in the draw twice. Hugs Mrs A.

  25. Oh! Mary you have far more patience than I do, AND recycling? I don't do that either, although I do have a load of stuff waiting to be LOL.

After all your playing this has turned out to be a beautiful card and love the sequins and the offset is a wonderful feature.

  26. That was quite a journey, Mary! But your background turned out gorgeous with the varying shades from pink to red. (I have the red problem when using Zigs.) Love the off set die cut! The sticky tool is wonderful for picking up sequins, but I found it doesn't hold up to a class situation. I found a way to make my own.

  27. Fabulous to read about the evolution of this amazing card, Mary ... the background in those 'layered' brusho colours is so striking and dramatic ... and what delicate die cuts ... the rose and butterfly are so pretty against it! Hugs, Anita :)

  31. I'm seeing so many wonderful things done with that rose die. This example really takes the cake. It's superb in every way. I love the reds and laughed at what the recycled bit was. I also laughed that you fancied it for a bit of altering and you don't do altering. I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets these sudden whims that have nothing to do with my reality!
