Coloring Book Zentangle Flowers

Hi, and welcome. Have you seen all the adult coloring books that are out now? I look through them for designs that I might enjoy coloring, but I'm always flummoxed at the large designs, never knowing how to use them. Some time ago, came across some smaller books, that possibly might work for card designs. Since I enjoy copic coloring, & wasn't quite sure how the paper would take to the markers, I copied some of the designs onto Copic Xpress paper (hope that doesn't violate any copyrights!)

Here's a card made from one colored quite a while back, and the design is from Color Zen Perfectly Portable Pages by Valentina Harper (found my book at a Michael's store for $5.00). The paper would probably work well for pencils, but I wanted to use copics, so needed a better & heavier quality paper. It was fun & therapeutic to color also.

 

 

Removed the page from the coloring book, copied onto Copic Xpress paper using the inkjet printer. Let the ink dry well before trying to color it.  (might be able to add some clear heat EP over the ink while it's still damp, and that would retard any smearing).

 

Used some of the Kaisercraft Gel pens on the flower & leaf veins, and added some gold Nuvo Crystals to the stamens.  Shaded the outside edges with DI Victorian Velvet.

 

- green edging was made by sponging DI shades of green over white c/s. Rubbed Perfect Pearls Gold mica powder over the sponging while it was still 'wet', and then burnished to a glow. Dry embossed with the C/B Falling Snow EF. Added this as a side and bottom border for a bit more color.

 

- die cut the sentiment from a snippet of the same green background, 2 layers. Added a trio of tiny pearls to finish off.

Zentangle Flower

Hello & Welcome. This is a scheduled post, as I'm trying to do a few posts ahead, and then keep up with visiting & commenting. I do get behind at times though, so please forgive me if it takes me a couple days to get back to your blog to see what you've shared.

I usually work on my cards at night, while watching old British series on Netflix or Acorn - which I love. Lately been enjoying Series 6 of Vera on Acorn and found the old Masterpiece Theater Duchess of Duke Street on Amazon Prime. Loving this - as I saw it many, many years ago on Masterpiece PBS.

While I'm watching tv, I'll color or doodle. This card is from a doodle session, where I'd stamped a line art flower (don't remember the maker, possibly Hero Arts, but if you're interested, I can find it in the Stash). I'd seen someone do Zentangle in an image like this, so gave it a try. I'll share 2 versions...and explain why I changed something after I saw the first photo.

Notice the hummingbird...Now look at the next photo, and I'll bet you can see why I changed the bird's colors.

 

First look

 





 

Liked the soft pinky colors on the bird here, thought it would work ok with the pink lattice trim, the pink in the flower. Until I saw the photo. Nope, that's not gonna go. Die cut another bird, used the colors from the butterfly, liked it much better!! What do YOU think? I've never seen a hummingbird wearing either of these colors, but maybe....somewhere?

 

- Used a Copic multiliner black pen to draw the doodles after stamping the flower. Die cut with a S/B label, traced the inner edge with a red multiliner. Not the smoothest of tracing, but - hey, it's not Hallmark! Call it whimsical! I think I try too hard - I'm not good with being 'loose'.

 

- background was a sprayed piece, that perhaps was gone over with some Distress ink and then embossed. It's been in the You-Know-Where pile for a while.

 

- MB Box tile (put away, so not recalling the name..but again, I can find it if you want to know)...cut from pink snippet. The flower had pink in it, the snippet was handy, so there you go. Looked 'beachy' with the greens & golds of the background I thought.

 

- MB butterfly and overlay. under layer was colored with Zig brushes in a red and bright yellow, blended. Rubbed some Liquid Pearl Opal over this layer with my finger, and IRL has a bit of shine that can be seen through the filigree overlay. Die cut a natural color snippet with the matching MB butterfly overlay, versamark, and WOW Pearl Gold, 2 coats. Quite pretty.

 

Tessla die hummingbird cut from the same natural snippet, colored with Zigs, Liquid Pearl opal, as I was thinking to bring in the pink of the borders. The more I looked at this, and when I saw the photo "Huh - uh, this is not good". So recut another hummer, colored to try to match the butterfly, more Pearls spread on it, just adhered over the pink fella. Liked it much better.

 

Added some dewdrops and a bead that was a RAK from my sweet Brenda at Crafting with Friends.

Brenda had sent me some of these she had made with Pony Beads. They're so pretty, and the bag is on my desk, but I usually don't think to add this kind of embellie or sequins. I'm trying to do better with that. I just never really know how to place them so they don't look peculiar!!

 

No sentiment, but this may become a birthday card to a family member, who is not too critical. I really didn't like the Zentangle in the flower at first, but the more I'm looking at it, the better I'm liking the effect {-:

 

Also, thanks to everyone for all your kind & sweet comments on the water color Christmas berries.  You all made me feel so much better about my efforts, 'cause truly, sometimes I get _real_ discouraged with trying to get better with this technique. I guess we all go there at times!

Now I'm being very brave to show today's card. Bear in mind, I do NOT know how to Zentangle, despite purchasing several books. After hunting for these safely stored books, I did find one. But I had already doodled this focal image, that I will refer to as a Zentangle! Since Mr. MoJo has gone walk-about for a while, sometimes at night I will just 'doodle' on leftover die cuts..mainly to keep myself awake while watching television. If I just sit, I tend to get sleepy in the wee small hours. Have no idea if it will ever actually get mailed to anyone...{go ahead, - you can laff at this one if you wanna :-)}

 

 

 

- the doodles were colored with pencils, pens and some felt tip markers like Sharpies. I've done several of these, and now have no clue as to how to use them. The background, which was a snippet

from another circle die cut, and was headed for the trash bin, came to the rescue here. Embossed it with Elizabeth Craft EF, Tiny Mosaic, and put some Sookwang behind the opening. The doodled circle (or Zen!) fit into the opening very nicely. The circle Zen piece is actually a snippet too, as it was a leftover on the desk pile.

 

- Double stitched circle frame is Avery Elle, which was a last minute addition (no, it's not covering any spacing from the inlay either. It was just still in the 'to put away' pile on the floor).  I'd seen another framed card somewhere and decided to add the frame at the last minute. Actually it sort of helps with the Zen, don't you think?

 

As I said, this one may never be mailed, but if and when, I'll add a die or stamped sentiment at the time.

Thanks so very much for choosing to become followers here. It's so exciting to see new faces appear in the followers' list. Additionally I will be sharing a lovely card we received from Brenda W of Inkspired to Stamp, with her first Spectrum Noir marker effort on a stamp that was in her candy package. Folks, she did an amazing job. DH said "You ought to show her the first one you did". Well, NO I'm not! Will share Brenda's card along with some pretty Valentine cards we've received - so check out the Cards by Friends tab at the top & enjoy.

Now, I have a few more Valentine cards, but have decided to share them all in one post, and just show the cards with no blather. Today I spent catching up bookwork, (the dreaded Visa bill arrived from my Heirloom Stamp Show shopping trip, and I'm feeling very guilty seeing how much was spent & feeling quite poor! Don't worry, as soon as the bill is paid, I'll get over it!). Also spent the afternoon trying to catch up on comments that have arrived for my blog, and now I need to spend some time visiting a couple of challenges I entered.

One night while vegging in front of Blue Bloods I found a die cut heart that had been used as a template (back of it had messed up stamping). Decided to finally try doing a little Zentangle doodling. Folks, it's harder than it looks - and no I did not hunt up any of the books bought to try to learn how. Got out one of the Copic Multiliner pens and started to doodle. So don't laugh! (well, OK, you can if you want to- I won't mind- really).

Here it is, placed  on top of that problem paper used on 2 Valentine cards. Hopefully you can see the slubs in the paper that make it look as though it is a pretty raw silk fabric.

 

 

Started the Zen with 3 zigzag doodle lines down the heart shape, then just started doodling more lines on the blank space between the heart edge and the first ziggly line. Then moved to the next one. You know what was hard for me? Trying to decide what the heck kind of line to draw! It ended up looking way too 'busy' for my eyes, but who knows, may find the books, and give it another try. It's a good way to be a bit productive while wasting time looking at Tom Selleck!
