Herringbone Birthday Card

SURE HAPPY IT'S FRIDAY!
Hello and welcome. I'm not sure why my mood gets a boost on Friday, but guess it's a holdover from when I worked. And since I frequently worked Saturday and sometimes Sunday too, still not certain why Friday perked me up so much, but It Did!

Please help me give a warm welcome to Gail Ann of Lacey Lassy, who has become a new follower. We met recently over at Mrs. A's Butterfly Challenge, and I'm looking forward to getting to know Gail better and enjoy her art.

Recently saw this beautiful card by my friend Carol.  Since I'm a former quilter (uh, make that a collector of fabric to be more honest), I really loved this card. Carol was kind enough to take photos, write explanations of each step on how to do this (maybe I'm the only one on the planet that didn't know how....!). When I asked Carol about posting her tutorial, she said she had found it on Splitcoast Stampers, so I'm not going to share Carol's excellent tutorial. I missed seeing the SCS tutorial*, but I surely appreciated Carol's efforts to help me! Carol also has some other fantastic cards on her blog using this herringbone technique. It was quite fun to do (although being me, I managed to mess up some things). This one was going to be my prototype, but I needed a birthday card, so I decided to CASE Carol's brilliant 4th of July card. Hope you like it, and do be sure to give Carol a visit - she does awesome cards!

- This is a great way to use up some snippets. Cut various design papers into 1/4" strips. Create a sticky back base, and start applying them in a pleasing pattern. Don't worry if you have tiny bits of open space, as you can cover up with embellishments (the sunflower hides a small one).

This piece should have been matted, but I simply trimmed the edges with an MFT Xstitch die, applied a MBox Penne Frame die (cut from a cream snippet) Used a sponge to apply DI Antique Linen around the edges of both the snippet formed base and the frame.

- Sentiment from a Gina K Flowers and Frames Stamp TV Kit. Used a new Hero Arts Red Ombre stamp pad to ink up the image.

Had seen this ink being used on a Jennifer McGuire Youtube recently, and needed to boost an order up a bit to take advantage of minimum free shipping. I think this ombre look is quite pretty, although it's not easy to see the gradations of colors in just simple sentiment stamping.

- Sunflower stamped with Memento Desert Sand on a small white snippet, colored with Copics. Tried to do the 'dot technique' of coloring on the center area,  using different colors of Y, YG and E. This dot stuff is much harder to do than it looks to be (much like Zentangle). At least for me it is. Added some Glossy Accents to the center. and it's ready for an insert and mailing.

Since there's LOTS of snippets on this card, I'm off to see Parsnip at the Snippets Playground Week 186. Some of my wonderful Blog Buddies have already started having fun & I don't wanna be left out. So c'mon along, and we'll just zip across the Pond and join 'em.

Come again when you can, and in the meantime, Many Blessings.

*Edit: Carol kindly sent me the SCS tutorial link to share....http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/resources/tutorials/herringbone/ so you can see step-by-step instructions. Thanks Carol L.!

  1. Great card Mary, i know the technique but still haven't found the time yet to do it myself but it looks really nice. And as you say a great opportunity to get rid of some snippets of designers paper.
Of which i have a box full. ;-(
Enjoy the weekend my dear, hugs Veerle xx

  2. This is a lovely example of a herringbone pattern Mary and I love all the different papers you have used and the sunflower looks really pretty with a glossy coat, and finished beautifully with the Antique Linen DI round the edges. Have a lovely weekend. x

  3. I think you did a wonderful job of CASEing Carol with this pretty herringboned snippets birthday card, Mary! I love the sunflower to top it off, too! Have a great weekend! I'll meet you behind the bike shed and I'm bringing some apple and rum muffins that are yummilicious!! We won't be able to actually RIDE the bikes afterwards, but then, we can't really ride bikes all that well anymore even without rum muffins, truth be told! Hugs, Darnell

  8. A wonderful CASE Mary and a great way to use up those pesky bits of paper. That ombre ink pad looks gorgeous too. I defeated the ironing pile today (in my defense I don't do it very often hence it would normally be a good place to hide!) so if the old mojo was thinks it's going to have an extended holiday it's wrong...I've got new baby makes to do and he's already a month old!! 9. This technique would be great for me - I have a whole box full of off-cuts and snippets of patterned paper that (hoarder that I am)can not bear to throw out. Now all I need is the time to sort through them and match up some coordinating patterns :)
Your card has really inspired me to have ago at this and I love the papers you have used on it.

  14. With my huge stack of snippets I'm always interested in new ideas on how to use them. You've created such an interesting look using different patterns, I'm definitely going to check out the details on this technique... I think your card came out so beautiful and I love the rustic look of it,

  16. Hi Mary! Thank you so much for the warm welcome! Looking forward to writing to you soon...it's a little busy at the law office I work in since we're in trial. I love this 'quilt' card. I think I'm going to need to try this with Christmas papers and then maybe a big snowflake in the middle. This is just lovely! Hugs, Gail L

  17. Congrats on your first herringbone card! I know you're going to make more in the future and you'll have so much fun experimenting with patterns and colors! It's a quilters paradise on paper! Great flower accent for the birthday sentiment too! Thanks for all the kind words, but I didn't come up with this idea! I found the tutorial here:

  20. Carol does make some fabulous cards with this kind of background, heck she is the queen of snippet background designing! I've tried this one time, and I love the results, but haven't tried it since. Not sure why I haven't. lol Your card turned out fabulous Momma Mary! I love the snippets you used for your background and I love your ombre sentiment. I just got one ombre pad from Simon Says, but haven't used it yet. That Jennifer McGuire sure can enable a person! lol Have a wonderful weekend Momma Mary! Hugs, Brenda

  21. Hi Mary,
what a great card, and a wonderful technique.
this is a great way to use snipppets.
Sounds like another crafty technique I have to learn.
I like the comment on your fabrics.
My dear blog friend Erika puts a funny on her blog each Saturday, and one was about hoarding fabrics.
Now how many of use do that, as well as our hoards of craft items.
I have material that I have had for about 30 years, and never sewn.
Love and big hugs from my house to yours, and have a wonderful weekend.
Lots of crafty love. Jenny L.

  25. Couldn't help but smile at your quilting (collecting of fabric!!!!), Mary!!!
I also did some quilting at some time (don't think there is anything that I haven't tried my hand at, except woodworking!!!) and I actually enjoyed it, but my first project was a queen size quilt!!! Think I have bitten off too much for a start!!! And I started doing the actual quilting by hand and now it's lying unfinished in a cupboard!!! Will hopefully at some stage finish it!!!
Love your 'quilted' card!!! What a great way to use up all those snippets!!! The sunflower is beautiful and I love that die-cut you've stamped the sentiment on!!!! Lovely!!!
    Enjoy the day!!!

  28. Gorgeous card Mary...love your paper quilt and I know just what you mean about hoarding fabric. But I have been much better at making clothes with the fabric I buy these days, hard to split free time between card making and sewing, LOL.
Love your card, so sweet and this would be perfect for a guy!
